As the narrator of ADOPTION IS A LIFELONG JOURNEY, Charlie invites readers to see the adoption journey from the perspective of a child adoptee. This illustrated book — a tool for families touched by adoption and foster care — provides insight into emotions and thoughts an adoptee or foster child might encounter while also equipping parents and caregivers with timely responses and resources. While every adoption story is unique, Charlie’s voice brings to light common themes the authors encounter as post adoption therapists at Boston Post Adoption Resources (BPAR). The book begins with Charlie settling into his adoptive home and progresses as he grapples with challenges such as building trust, feeling a sense of worth, relating to his beginnings, and establishing his identity. The illustrated portion connects to recommendations for parents: things to think about, tips for conversations, family activities, and additional resources. Who can benefit from the book: adoptive or foster parents, mental health professionals, adoption and foster care agencies, prospective adoptive parents, teachers and school health facilitators....

Adoption Is a Lifelong Journey Reviews
My heart has been stolen by Charlie, by teddy, and by this incredible book. As someone with little previous understanding of the adoption experience, Adoption Is A Lifelong Journey opened my eyes to the challenges faced by adoptive families. I am blown away by the expertise offered by these three authors and their ability to present the subject in an approachable, understandable, reassuring, and heartfelt way. A key tool for families touched by adoption and foster care and an incredible resource for anyone who wants to gain an understanding of adoption and insight into the experience of a child adoptee.
This book opened my eyes and touched my heart. Now I understand what a child adoptee might be feeling when he first settles into his new home, or why he feels conflicting emotions on a birthday, or why something as common as a family tree assignment in school causes anxiety. The authors (all specialists in adoption-related therapy) write from the child's perspective to enlighten parents. They also share recommendations and advice based on their clinical experience. This is a great resource for the adoption community.
As the sister of an adopted brother (many years ago), and as the aunt who was privileged to travel to China for a niece's adoption of her daughter, I found the first section of this book compelling as I read it from the perspective of the adopted child. In simple, sensitive, insightful language and drawings it beautifully shares what any adoptee may be feeling or thinking at any given moment and what approach, information, and sharing may be most helpful by parents, friends, teachers, etc. The second section has excellent suggestions for various situations accompanied by additional resources for the adults in the adoptees life. This book is a valuable resource.
