mind behind the mind trinity torn 1 Reviews
Mind Behind The Mind was a refreshing magical read. It had everything from witches and magic to witch hunters and even scandal. It had a darkness to it that keep you on your toes and kept you waiting on the edge of your seat to find out what was going to happen. It starts with a witch named Tessa sent on her first mission in help a woman’s husband who has fallen ill. No medicine has helped and no doctor knows why, so Tessa is sent in to use her ‘magic’ to heal him. In a town that’s so small where everyone knows everyone and everything about their families Tessa and her client have this elaborate cover story of how she’s a cousin of the family to hide the fact tha she's a witch and also the bargain between them. It is against every moral fiber in these mortal beings to speak of witches let alone consort with them. Tessa's life is in danger as well as her client's if the townspeople...especially the church found out she hired a witch to heal her husband when everyone believes that it was a witch that cursed him.But the tension gets thick when a witch hunter shows up in town. He's not there for Tessa, but the odds that he's passing through when she's there is no coincidence. Now Tessa has to be quick on her toes and get the job done as soon as possible. The last thing she was expecting was to have an attraction to the hunter known Sabastian…who prefers to be called Bastian. But when Bastian expresses interest in the man that mysteriously fell ill and Tessa confessions of her sick cousin's husband he feels inclined to help solve the question of who sickened her client’s husband.I’m not for spoilers (you should know that by now), but the secrets get darker and the suspense get thicker. The world creation was interesting and enjoyable. The description of this world and how it differs to what we know was great. The plot was well thought out and kept you wanting to read more. My only negative remark is that the characters were tolerable. In the beginning there was too much of said lust and yearning, it got to be repetitive and drew me off. For the first handful of chapters the only interaction the two main characters had were when they were intimate, which beforehand was talk about how they couldn’t control themselves or their feelings toward the other. Tessa mentions bits of her past and she even admits to being very ‘active’. This caused me to second guess the relationship that grew between the two. Were they really interested in each other or was it just magic that drew them together. As a whole I wasn’t disappointed with the read because the plot was very intriguing, it was just a little slow at first.
I received this book through the First Reads giveaways for an honest review.Normally, I don't go in for lite fantasy, especially romance; and therefore, I was pleasantly surprised by how well written and engaging this book was. Although the story is not particularly complicated, and the romance is not particularly steamy, the characters are actually engaging. However, what is most impressive is the last 50 pages of the novel when Alexa Grave departs from the fluff that preceded and moved into a higher form of fantasy through the beginnings of world building. The plot centers around two characters, the male and female protagonists, and aside from the world the exist in having magic and one is a witch and the other a witch hunter the early parts of the book are the usual supernatural romance. However, Mrs. Grave is quite clever with how she approaches the story, and while the romance is certainly front and center, when the novel moves from the first location to Haven, the witches town the novel takes a turn for the better. The romance takes a backseat for the intrigue which had been the background. Ultimately, without doing spoilers, the main plot is solved in a satisfactory way while leaving you wanting to see where the Trinity Torn universe goes. Perhaps one day Mrs. Grave will turn her talents towards Epic and High fantasy, to move into a more illustrious circle.
I wasn't sure what to expect when I picked up Mind Behind the Mind, but I was pleasantly surprised. Grave does creates a magical world, and her descriptive techniques allow the reader to create the perfect image of it in their mind. The character development was sufficient but I was left wanting to learn more about Bastien's childhood, which only begins to unravel at the end of the story. This story is read from the main character, Tessa's vantage point. She is a witch, the daughter of the High Priest. In the beginning of the novel, she is on her first mission. She has to leave Haven to help a woman, who's husband has fallen ill. While she is trying to help heal the man, a witch hunter comes to town and nothing in either of their lives will be the same. The witch hunter isn't in town for Tessa's head and doesn't know she's a witch, but he's drawn to her more than he should be and becomes infatuated with her. They begin a relationship; before he knows what hit him, he's whisked off to Haven.I won't give any spoilers away because it's definitely worth it to read it through. I've already researched for the second book, but can't find anything and I'll be jonesin' until I can get my hands on it. Terrific read!Disclaimer: I would like to thank the publisher and Netgalley for providing me a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
I received this book from Goodreads Giveaway. From the colorful cover to the fast-paced read, this book held my interest until the end. Alexa Grave is an author I will definitely look for when purchasing new books.
Has a little bit of everything: fantasy, romance, adventure, and heart. Left me wanting to read the sequel.
