I have enjoyed Stuart Campbell's superb writing before with an Englishman's Guide to Infidelity. The Making of Martin F. Mooney is filled with twists, turns and moral and some immoral dilemmas. In a light hearted fun way it follows the life and travails of a failed, lascivious university professor who shifts to a country town after he is accused of plagiarism. There are many sub plots in the background about the building of an Islamic Education Centre in the country town, and the lustful professor takes up with the local member of parliament as her lover and campaign manager. The author's character development is excellent and while the story is a little jumpy, it is very enjoyable. I say jumpy because some of the characters, like the Italian fixer, are introduced when least expected. On reflection, there are a large number of characters, but thanks to the author's skills there is no need for backtracking. One of my tests of a good read is the time it takes me to finish. A one session read is always five stars. The making of Martin F. Mooney took two nights, so it's 4 1/2 stars rounded to five. Highly recommended.
