Twin Text: One Cool Friend by Toni Buzzeo, 2012Rationale: Since Elliott's cool friend in One Cool Friend is a penguin, Could a Penguin Ride a Bike? is a good companion and way to find out additional information about penguins. I also liked that both books share a humorous tone. Structure: The Text structure in Could a Penguin Ride a bike is primarily a question and answer format. The answers and the graphic sources on each page also add details.Strategy: I would first have my students use webbing to take notes about the different abilities and behaviors discussed in Could a Penguin Ride a Bike? Next, I would use the Venn Diagram strategy (Camp, 2000) to have students compare and contrast which events in One Cool Friend are realistic and which would not fit with what we know about penguins. Another possible extension would be to have students write another section for One Cool Friend where Elliott and Magellan have another experience based on one of the questions answered in Could a Penguin Ride a Bike?.

I love the idea behind this book. Sharing facts about king penguins through silly questions. While the questions are silly, the answers are not. The illustration with the penguin using himself as a bowling ball is my favorite illustration and the information about how penguins can move faster on land (ice) by sliding on their bellies is interesting. This book is bound to be of interest to penguin mad readers or any young reader who has lots of questions.

Very fun, storyline “nonfiction”. I do think it’s a bit far fetched to announce penguins make ace skateboarders, at least until we see video evidence. Ages 4-7

Elementary school readers will enjoy this fact-filled book about penguins. The author imagines that a penguin comes to stay with the reader, which gives rise to all sorts of impossible scenarios, including his consumption of a lot of fish for dinner, the terrible sounds he makes when vocalizing, and his need to be around others. The text and illustrations are lively and humorous and might make readers realize that as adorable as penguins are, they would not make very good pets. The books in this series are great fun to read, and even adults can learn something from dipping into them. There is even a map at the back of the book showing where penguins may be found.

Could a Penguin Ride a Bike was written by Camilla de la Bédoyère. Through asking a series of silly questions like "What if a penguin went bowling?" the book provides facts about penguins. It teaches children about how they swim, what they eat, how they sleep, that they are NOT very good singers and much more! This book is a great way to teach students about the lives of penguins by asking silly questions and following up with facts about penguin life. The illustrations by Aleksei Bitskoff are colorful and playful. They bring imaginary scenes to life to show the some of the silly things penguins might do if they tried to act like people.

Nice non-fiction picture book about what penguins can and can't do and why. Gives young readers just enough information to answer the question without being too overbearing. A nice introduction to penguins.

I previewed this for the library; it's a definite "buy." Wonderful illustrations, a fun mix of facts and humor, entertaining for both children and their adult readers. Worth it for the illustrations alone.

This informative book on penguins has interesting, funny and gross facts that are told through text and illustrations comparing humans with penguins. It is delightful, entertaining and a fun way to learn about penguins.
