Preface.Within this little volume lie treasure troves of insight for the whole pursuit of a Christian's life. In spite of the great trials, Charles Ogilvie is committed to press on in his faith. Through the words of a fellow traveller, he is challenged to go beyond the expected duties of a Christian and to focus inwardly on such radical change as a repentant heart, made possible only by the miraculous work of the Holy Spirit. But peer pressure has a strange way of making one ashamed of the gospel of Christ! For even in the soul of a boy like Charles, there is natural enmity to God, and we are by nature wanderers. This is going on my favorite Lamplighter list!

You will not find many works of fiction that exalt the Word of God as much as this one. The story begins with Charles at age 13, ostensibly alone and without possessions. But as Charles knows, and as we see through his life, he is never truly alone or without, for God cares for him. As we observe how Charles handles his circumstances—from living with scorners to the temptation of friendship with the world—our own faith and conversation cannot help but be challenged. The author has given us in Charles a wonderful example of what it means to live out the gratefulness of what our Lord and Saviour Jesus has done for us when he purchased our salvation by his death on the cross and his resurrection from the grave. I have no hesitations in recommending this book to everyone. It is one of the best novels I have ever read. Children as young as eight and the oldest adult will likewise enjoy this timeless book.
